Communication is the cornerstone of any successful business. It’s also the cornerstone of the U.S. Superyacht Association’s (USSA) efforts to brief captains on the latest rules and regulations affecting their and their crew’s ability to enter U.S. waters and enjoy their time here. Unfortunately, lack of communication on the local and even federal level when it comes to customs and immigration is negatively impacting not only them, but also the American companies that rely on their business. That’s why the USSA is simultaneously reaching out to Washington, to bring federal officials together with captains to open productive dialogue. In this Megayacht News Radio podcast, I speak with Tim Davey, a founding member of the USSA who’s among those leading the charge. He explains the progress made so far, as well as what all parties can expect in the months and years to come.

Attention crewmembers and owners: “Ask questions.” That’s the biggest piece of advice that Mark Bononi, the director of the luxury-yacht division of MHG Marine Benefits, gives to crew and their employers when inquiring about health-insurance plans. Insurance is something many of us would prefer not to think about, but should. And in the marine world, where you’re constantly traveling and in situations that are far from ordinary land-based experiences, it’s vital. In this podcast, Bononi discusses how MHG understands yacht-specific situations and helps find plans to meet those needs, whether for individuals or full crews. In addition, given the U.S. Congress’ ongoing debate over a national health-care bill, he reveals how regulatory issues can affect coverage for crew of all nationalities.

Whether a yacht charters or is strictly for private use, oftentimes the guests will want to experience something exceptional. It might be an after-hours tour of a museum or shopping experience, for example. Then there are seemingly mundane but crucial tasks like ensuring a spare part flown in from overseas can make it through customs. The list of items to address when it comes to a superyacht goes on and on. Unfortunately, the duties are sometimes placed squarely on the shoulders of the captains and crew, who already have a long list of regular duties to prioritize. That’s where yacht-service agencies come in, like BWA Yachting. BWA works with yacht-management companies as well as captains and owners to assist them with their various needs. These include the VIP concierge services mentioned above, but also things like provisioning, berthing, fueling, and even bank transactions. After all, the global nature of the business and of the cruising seasons mean that the yachts are constantly moving in and out of different countries. In this podcast, Stefano Tositti of BWA Yachting explains more about what his agency does and, equally important, how it stays on top of changing rules and regulations in the varying countries in which it operates.

Barclays is well known for its banking, investment management, wealth management, and other financial services for high-net-worth individuals. While it’s the largest wealth manager in the UK, it has offices in 50 countries, including the United States. It’s also interesting – and important – to note that while the global banking collapse prompted some major lenders to withdraw from recreational lending, Barclays did not, continuing to finance megayachts from 40 meters (131 feet) and up. In this podcast, I speak with

, the director of Corporate Jets and Superyachts for Barclays, to learn how it dodged the proverbial bullet and discuss its financing options. It’s a must-listen for anyone contemplating purchasing a yacht or funding a refit. NOTE: The URL mentioned in the podcast for Barclays is incorrect; the proper one is given in the paragraph above.

When most people think of refit yards, locations in Florida or Europe come to mind. But there are fine facilities along the West Coast of the United States, too – Marine Group Boat Works being among them. Located in Chula Vista on San Diego Bay, Marine Group Boat Works has serviced, refitted, and repaired a number of power and sail megayachts since its founding just a few years ago. In this podcast, we speak with vice president Todd Roberts about its specialties and, equally important, how the company is helping publicize the greater benefits of the San Diego area for superyachts.
