Sycara IV close to launch via twitpic.com

All that was missing were the women dressed as flappers.

Sycara IV, a fantail-style motoryacht that looks as if she stepped straight out of the early 20th century, launched last Saturday at Burger Boat Company. The owners, Ray and Elsie Catena, were on hand, of course, with christening honors going to Elsie.

While Burger has always built custom yachts, the 151-foot Sycara IV, designed by Bruce King, is undoubtedly every inch a custom project. Take a close look at the trail board below; when’s the last time you saw anything like that on a modern megayacht? Hand-carved by Burger’s craftsmen, it’s among many intricate period-oriented features aboard.

Even the interior design, from Ken Freivokh and Burger’s in-house team, reflects the 1920s. White-painted panels combine with madrona burl paneling, the latter accented by ebony inlays and paduak molding (a red-tone African wood prized for its toughness and carving ability). There’s also teak and sycamore flooring offset by white carpeting in some areas. Even the crew areas get the Art Deco treatment, featuring mahogany and white paneling. French doors, Lalique crystal, and other accents throughout further add to the appeal.

Sycara IV is set for delivery in July, after which she’s expected to travel via the Great Lakes to the East Coast, then cruise south. She’ll make her formal debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show – but I’ll be seeing her next week, during a visit to the yard. I’ll have more on her as well as Burger’s other projects soon.

Does anyone know where the Sycara IV will be during the first weekend of December? Will it be at the St. Petersburg Boat show? I will be in Tampa that week and would love to see it. I missed it coming through the St. Lawrence in September. Any info would be nice, thanks.

I could not believe my eyes. It was like stepping back in time. It was like the ships models I built in my room as a kid growing up at the Jersey Shore. Its presently docked next to McLoone's Rum Runner in Sea Bright. What a beauty!

Docked next to McLoone's Rum Runner in Sea Bright. So beautiful and amazing that we had to turn around and take a second longer look. I tried to photograph it, but could not do it justice. I feel so fortunate for having been able to see her in person. Her beauty is beyond description.

I saw the Sycara IV today, while it was docked at the Public Dock in Troy, NY. What a Beautiful site! I watched, with friends, as a crane lifted a boat onto her deck. Awesome! Would have loved to seen the inside. I am sure she will be gone when I get to work tomorrow morning ... Oh! if I had only had a camera. Godspeed wherever the waters take her.

21,September 2009 “Sycara IV” is a 151’ fantail motor yacht defined and styled in vintage 1920’s and custom built specifically for traveling along the Erie Barge Canal waterways, “Sycara IV” recently built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin at Burger Boat Company. This marks “Sycara IV’s” first voyage straight from the factory late August 2009 in WI to her home port in NJ. “Sycara IV” while Cruising the Erie Canal visits Brewerton, NY and docks overnight at Ess-Kay Yards. After making a stop in her home port “Sycara IV” will venture to The 2009 International Boat Show in Fort Lauderdale in October.

the pictures will be posted in my beauty shop with pride!!

Thank you for the opportunity to see this BEAUTIFUL yacht. It was a sunny morning at the Erie Basin Marina where we went to view the Sycara iv. Her crew was hard at work cleaning her up. I wonder how many Buffalo sailors are dreaming of owning such a "sweet boat". Thanks again for stopping in Buffalo.

Glad to know a few of you have seen her. Yes, she's quite authentic!

To learn more about her, you can use the Search function here on Megayacht News, and you can also visit Burger Boat Company's Web site.

Sycara IV passed St. Clair MI downbound in the St. Clair River about 7 PM EDT. Absolutely stunning design! Had all who saw her fooled, as we thought she was from the 1920's. Is there a web site or other location to get more info on her?
